Guidance on the Use of Fertilizers and Herbicides
Factuality Rating: Mostly False
Claim:
Chautauqua has issued a policy banning the use of pesticides on the grounds.
Summary:
This is labeled “mostly false” because Chautauqua does control the use of fertilizers and herbicides on property owned by the Institution; however, there is no policy prohibiting their use on properties the Institution does not own. The Institution encourages property owners to seek professional consultation and support or to use organic alternatives to fertilizers and herbicides.
On July 18, Chautauqua Institution sent a message to property owners (available here) asking them to, “…implement best practices for fertilizer use that protect water quality and the health of the Chautauqua Lake aquatic ecosystem.” Within that message, it was stated that the use of fertilizers or herbicides on Chautauqua Institution’s property by personnel not employed or authorized by the Institution is prohibited.
Please refer to the letter (linked above and below in the references) for guidance on this topic of concern to all who care about Chautauqua Lake conservation.
