Factuality Rating: Question
Question:
What are the plans for the Vanderbeck Chapel? Is it being maintained properly? Did CHQ forgo a donation to the CHQ Foundation in order to get it? If so, why? Did money change hands? What was the purchase price?
Summary:
The Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees Development Council approved the receipt of the Vanderbeck Chapel gift from the International Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons (IOKDS) at its meeting on October 23, 2024. This was reported in the minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting of November 9, 2024.
As of this writing, the Institution does not yet own this property. We have a maintenance plan for use when that transaction is complete. We plan to use it for programs and events appropriate to the space, including Special Studies. The Institution did not make any payment for the property as part of the gift agreement.
Representatives of the IOKDS approached the Institution about its desire to make a gift to memorialize the organization’s legacy at Chautauqua. We jointly agreed that the gift of property would be a great way to honor their contributions in perpetuity.
